How Will Brock Lesnar Return to WWE?

Elevate The Mid-Card

Throughout professional wrestling, the rise of a wrestler to stardom is often formulaic. A wrestler may start off in a tag team and break into singles action. Some may start out as enhancement talent before being brought in on a full-time deal. However, some wrestlers may do none of these. In fact, some wrestlers may be named “Brock Lesnar.” Within his main roster WWE career, Lesnar has never won a mid-card, tag team, or lower-card belt. Due to Lesnar’s sheer star power, WWE has never bothered to award him with anything less than the top prize on any brand. Now, there is some debate within the community on if this is a Lesnar decision or a WWE decision. With that being said the concepts in this article are dependent on both parties agreeing to the story.

With rumors swirling of an impending John Cena return, I believe that it’s time we rekindle an old rivalry. Throughout the 2010s, Cena and Lesnar engaged in an on-again-off-again rivalry that provided some incredible matches. With two stars of this caliber, it only made sense to have the two contend for the WWE Championship throughout their feud… but what if that was different? On WWE’s main roster, we have two mid-card champions. As of this writing, Apollo Crews is our WWE Intercontinental Champion and Sheamus is our WWE United States Champion.

The idea is simple. We have John Cena return to WWE and immediately lay down the challenge for the one championship he’s yet to have held in the company – the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Apollo Crews is downplaying the idea, claiming Cena lacks the ability to outwrestle Nigerian royalty such as himself. This leads to an eventual feud between Cena and Crews, where Crews would pick up some victories thanks to Commander Azeez. Inevitably, though, the plan would be for Cena to capture the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

Just as he had done in the past, this leads to Cena issuing open challenge after open challenge for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Let Cena go on a great run with the championship. Allow the leader of the Cenation to put on stellar matches with rising stars such as Aleister Black, Dominik Mysterio, Chad Gable, and even Otis. I’m talking Sami Zayn vs. John Cena levels of great matches. We’ve all seen it before; John Cena elevates the level of every single performer he steps in the ring with, and this would be no different. At the Royal Rumble, John Cena makes an entrance and announces an open challenge for the title… only for it to be answered by “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar.

Let Lesnar dominate Cena and win the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his career. Afterward, Cena and Lesnar reignite their rivalry building to a match at Wrestlemania that year between Cena and Lesnar. This would effectively allow fans to care about the WWE Intercontinental Championship more than they would originally; it would diversify Lesnar’s championship résumé, and it would hold the company true to their promise of “Anything can happen in WWE!” Beyond this, we would get some stellar matches between Cena and Lesnar over a title that is in need of some elevation.
