Moving to the United States, in 1971, the Iron Sheik earned the prestigious title of the Greco-Roman Amateur Athletic Union champion and claiming the gold medal in the 180.5-pound weight category. Building on his success, he went on to serve as an assistant coach for the USA team during the 1972 Olympic Games held in Munich.
In 1972, Khosrow was invited to become a professional wrestler by AWA’s promoter, the legendary Verne Gagne. The Iron Sheik rose to prominence during the 1980s in the WWF, captivating audiences with his unique blend of athleticism and villainous charisma. He was a true master of the craft, combining technical prowess with an unrivaled ability to rile up the crowd. Whether loved or loathed, his impact on the wrestling world was undeniable.
Sheik defeated Bob Backlund for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship on December 26, 1983. The following month, Sheik would lose the title to Hulk Hogan at Madison Square Garden on January 23, 1984, widely recognized as the birth of Hulkamania. While his title reign was short-lived, it served as the perfect transition to establish Hogan as the new face of the company, marking a landmark moment in the changing direction of the company and eventually revolutionizing the professional wrestling industry forever. Sheik then went on to feud with Sgt. Slaughter, before forming an anti-American team with Nikolai Volkoff.
