Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
Without knowing what happens on tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown, and without spoiling the results of next week’s Monday Night Raw, it’s still going to be up in the air what the teams are for WarGames at this year’s Survivor Series. However, it does appear as though one side will feature Roman Reigns, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, Sami Zayn, and Seth Rollins against Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and Bronson Reed.
My question for you today is “Do you think this is the right lineup, or would it be better staying at just 4 versus 4, or some other alternative idea?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
Frankly, I think the fifth member idea is stupid. There are so many other ways this could have worked out if they felt they needed a fifth person on each team, but that isn’t necessary to begin with.
There have been 4 person team WarGames matches before. They’ve worked fine. This isn’t like making a 15-entry Royal Rumble that would severely diminish the quality of the match, or a 3 person Elimination Chamber that ruins the gimmick. 4 people in WarGames still functions the same. They start off with 1-on-1, New Bloodline gets the advantage (always better with heels first), then you go face 2, heel 3, face 3, heel 4, face 4, done.
But if they really felt the need to do a fifth, what happened to Hikuleo? Where is The Rock? I don’t agree with the idea I’ve seen pitched around that this should be Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens, as it makes no sense to me Owens would be feuding with Cody over being mad at The Bloodline, only to then team with them. Cody could have worked as the fifth person on the face team and Hikuleo could have debuted in the meantime to be their fifth. Owens could have screwed over Cody and/or The Rock could interfere and voila. But I’d much rather have just seen this be the teams of 4.
As it stands, assuming Rollins and Reed do get confirmed for the match, why should Rollins want to be helping out Roman? What does he get out of the equation? And why should Reed care to help The Bloodline? Again, what does he get?
They need to establish a motive beyond just that those 2 hate each other and being in this match is the only way they’re allowed to fight again. If that’s it, why would they care to go after anyone else in the fight? It wouldn’t make sense for Seth to be fired up to battle it out wirh Tonga Loa, for instance, nor should Reed spend any energy on Jimmy Uso.
Unless there’s a much better story in the works about Rollins and Reigns making up that I’m not aware of, I can’t help but to think this is a misguided decision. Even if that’s the case, I don’t think we’re going to look back and think the way Reed was involved made any sense. WWE could very well be hoping “the rule of cool” saves them here with fans not bothering to think about the logic just because they want to see those 2 guys in the ring.
