Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
Tonight on WWE RAW, there will be a Fatal 4-Way No. 1 Contender’s Match to determine the next challenger for GUNTHER and the World Heavyweight Championship. Seth Rollins, Damian Priest, Sheamus, and Dominik Mysterio will battle it out to get that spot.
If you check out the Raw spoilers, you’ll know who wins, but we’re going to address this in a non-spoiler fashion (especially since I wrote this up before the spoilers came out!)
My question for you today is “Who would you pick to win that match and when would you book the title match against Gunther to take place?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
Two of these aren’t even options. I can’t imagine Dominik Mysterio will fight Gunther, nor is it worth revisiting the Sheamus element right now out of nowhere. It has to come down to Damian Priest or Seth Rollins.
Between those two, I’d lean more toward Priest, depending upon what other things WWE has in mind for the next couple months. But here’s how I imagine it will go.
Rollins versus Gunther is a match that sells itself, but it should have a little more of a build than a 3 week rush that will get lost in the shuffle of the WarGames match. That isn’t the case for Priest versus Gunther, as they don’t have as much intrigue behind their encounter, having already fought before. This is just the delayed rematch from the title changing hands a few months ago.
Priest recently lost to Dom, so I’d have the opposite happen here. Meanwhile, Rollins can be booked to look strong in his own right, only for Bronson Reed to interfere and screw him over. That feud shouldn’t be over after just one singles match at Crown Jewel. I want Rollins versus Reed again in a gimmick match of some kind at Survivor Series or on the Raw that precedes it in order for that to be the true end of their feud.
Rollins can get his title shot against Gunther either at Saturday Night’s Main Event or Royal Rumble. CM Punk is also a lingering option, whenever he’s set to return. Maybe they go back-to-back, but I’d rather save something for another time, and I’d rather see both in the Royal Rumble match. Then again, there’s the Netflix premiere of Raw, which should have a big title match to it, so one of those can fight there.
I’d probably put Rollins against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event, since Rollins will have moved on from Reed by that point. Punk gets the next match on the Raw episode, and crosses paths with Rollins. The two fight inside the Royal Rumble match, likely with one of them eliminating the other and kicking that feud off to a higher level, while Gunther defends at RR against Goldberg, unless that’s being set up for WrestleMania 41, though I still think John Cena winning the Royal Rumble and challenging Gunther at Mania is the better option. Priest, meanwhile, gets his rematch against Gunther at Survivor Series, comes up short, enters the Royal Rumble, and I guess works his way into an Intercontinental Championship program opposite Bron Breakker during the Road to WrestleMania. Dom is likely having a Judgment Day versus Wyatt Sicks feud, and Sheamus is, unfortunately, relegated to the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.
