Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
While not the final pay-per-view of the year in a traditional sense, WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event might as well be, as these two hours could prove to be very important heading into 2025. There are five matches on the card, one of which determines an historic first-ever women’s midcard champion with the Women’s United States Championship tournament coming to a close. Other belts are on the line as well, so my question for you today is “What are your predictions for WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
Drew McIntyre vs. Sami Zayn
There is far more buzz surrounding McIntyre’s return right now than Zayn. Sami has to be the fall guy. Drew can continue to have his number, and take this victory into an eventual match against Jey Uso, as undoubtedly, Jey is going to be looking for some revenge once he’s cleared for in-ring competition, after McIntyre attacked him backstage.
WWE Women’s United States Championship Tournament Final: Chelsea Green vs. Michin
Originally, I thought in advance that Bayley would win this and set the tone for this championship. My thought process was that Seth Rollins winning the World Heavyweight Championship is the best indicator we have of what Triple H would book for these new belts. Even though Kelani Jordan as the NXT Women’s North American champion is a more direct example of a women’s midcard title being created this year to show off where their heads are at for booking, that’s still partially under Shawn Michaels.
Stratton has the Money in the Bank, so she doesn’t need this. Bayley is a former world champion multiple times over. If she wins this, she immediately brings some credibility with her to this new belt.
However, after SmackDown, we see that it is now indeed Chelsea Green against Michin, surprising me with that outcome. Now, I have to fully go in the direction of Green. While I wouldn’t be opposed to Michin finally winning something for the first time in WWE, I do think the title has more legs if Green is champion.
Triple Threat Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Gunther (c) vs Finn Balor vs Damian Priest
Gunther is obviously going to retain here. The Ring General isn’t likely to drop this belt until at least WrestleMania, if not later, depending on who his opponent will be.
In the meantime, I’m surprised they went ahead and did the Triple Threat already. I figured that would have been saved for the Netflix debut of Raw, or the January 25th Saturday Night’s Main Event, or even Royal Rumble. By doing this now, and jumping the gun, I’m suspicious Gunther might be traded over to SmackDown via the “transfer window” and we might see Cody Rhodes move over to the Raw roster in turn. If that happens, that would excuse why they’re suddenly getting this out of the way, as Gunther would be on the opposite brand as these two—assuming Priest and/or Balor don’t jump to SmackDown as well with him.
Women’s World Championship Match: Liv Morgan (c) vs. Iyo Sky
While there’s certainly a chance we see Iyo Sky win this title and defend it against Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania after The Eradicator wins the Royal Rumble or something, I just don’t see that happening. This year has revolved too much around Ripley and Morgan feuding. For it to be someone else who beats Morgan for the belt just to pivot that hard would be odd.
Ripley has already said she’s going to keep going after Morgan. I think we have that match take place either on the Raw Netflix debut, or the next SNME, and Ripley is champion before Royal Rumble kicks in. If she defends the title there, maybe she fights Iyo Sky or Raquel Rodriguez.
Here, though, Morgan retains, by hook or by crook. People boo. It’s the second to last match of the night and sets up a babyface finale.
WWE Championship Match: Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens
Not only is there no chance Cody Rhodes is dropping this title to anyone but The Rock, Roman Reigns, or Randy Orton, but he’s likely going to have the old school classic Winged Eagle WWE Championship title belt with him for this appearance. Can you imagine the insanity of having him drop that belt, right here, to Kevin Owens?!
SNME ends with The American Nightmare standing tall and celebrating a victory, unless there’s a surprise appearance from The Rock just to get people talking.
