Becky Lynch will face SmackDown Women’s Champion, Asuka, in a high-stakes match at the 2019 Royal Rumble, which takes place tonight (27/01).
The Man has taken over SmackDown in the past few months, but her loss at the TLC pay-per-view in December was a step-back.
Even though she never lost the title via pinfall or submission, she was not entitled to an automated rematch, due to the decision of the McMahon family to do away with contractually-obligated rematches.
So, Lynch had to defeat Charlotte Flair and Carmella and become the No.1 contender. Since then, Lynch has built her feud with Asuka around being “The Man”.
Lynch also stated that Asuka has never defeated her one-on-one, so the current champion cannot consider herself “The Man”.
At the same time, their match at the Rumble will have huge implications, as the winner will go on to Wrestlemania 35 as the champion.
Lynch certainly deserves to headline the Grandest Stage of Them All, as her promos and bold personality have generated the most buzz of any WWE superstar over the last few months.
Concurrently, The Man is looking for retribution against RAW Women’s champion Ronda Rousey, whose interference at TLC cost Lynch the title.
With that in mind, if Lynch defeats Asuka and reclaim the title, she will prove she is the number one threat to Rousey and the one that can beat her.
For her part, Asuka has the momentum on her side, since the company decided to name her the champion. Yet, it is uncertain what plans the company has for her, as the Road to Wrestlemania is about to start.
If the WWE decides to proceed with Lynch as the champion, then it is likely Asuka will be paired in a tag-team and fight in the new-born Women’s tag-team division.
