With the many discussions of promos being scripted, unusual heel turns, and ongoing power struggles, it brings us to beg the question, “Has WWE
creative lost their mind?” I know there have been plenty of questions raised
and usually I just write them off, but this is starting to get ridiculous.
Wrestling fans can look back at the last couple of years as
a period of confusing storylines and missed opportunities. There were plenty of
instances where they could have done something special, but they fell short
again. In my opinion, the examples listed below are a sample size of some of the
scenarios I have been talking about.
- Breakup of the Wyatt Family: The Wyatt Family
was born in NXT and was heavily promoted before coming onto the main roster. Once
they arrived they were instantly a crowd favorite with their chilling entrance
theme and sadistic style that hasn’t been seen in a long time. They seemed to
be on a roll and jelled so well together as a 3 man Tag Team that there was preliminary
talk about making a 3-man Tag Team title. Instead, the WWE instead decided to
break the team up, leading to all 3 wrestlers becoming singles competitors,
with only Bray Wyatt having a defined role. - Decision to Bring the Authority back: The
Authority did not impress me as much as I thought it would. Weekly rants and
barbaric actions bestowed upon the WWE roster only gave me a peak of interest
as it became irrelevant without an unpredictable twist. What if Triple H played
Stephanie against Vince? What if Triple H had to enter the Royal Rumble and finish
in the Top 5 in order to be reinstated? There were plenty of options available
instead of using Edge and Christian in a lame attempt to have Cena bring them
back. - Breakup of the Real Americans: The Real
Americans were a fantastic idea that gave one wrestler in Swagger a renewed
identity and another in Cesaro a new found fame. Cesaro was on a roll and
seemed to continue his hot streak up until the split. Creative then decided to
take the crowd-pleaser in a different direction by changing his music, giving
him a flashy robe, and making him a Paul Heyman guy. As we all know, this essentially
killed his character and left us all asking why? - Sting is here and Sting is gone: Once the WWE
signed Sting to a contract we all knew it was just a matter of time before we
would see him inside of wrestling ring, even if it was only for one last match.
The problem I have with his return at Survivor Series is that it was poorly
scripted and after he returned, he vanished again with barely a mentioned on
the following night’s raw. I honestly liked the idea of him making the save,
but the aftermath of the situation is where it got confusing. Now it looks as
though he will be back for a build up towards WrestleMania. Either way, I think
creative could have scripted the whole thing better, making it seem more than a
5 minute cameo.
These are just a few of the instances in which the creative
direction had seemed questionable. Lately, there have been rumors of Dean
Ambrose, another crowd favorite possible turning heel. Why? There was also the
Daniel Bryan announcement that he is healthy and entering the royal Rumble. Why
did that have to be scripted? Why not have him come back as a surprise #30 in
the rumble like Cena did in MSG? These are just some of the reasons why people like
myself are questioning the creative style and direction of the WWE lately.
Where are the instinctive storylines? Who has ultimate say? Is there a power
struggle between Triple H and Vince McMahon going on behind the scenes?
