Fans of Nigel McGuinness’ work on commentary have Michael Cole to thank as it was the WWE veteran who gave the Brit a ton of knowledge.
McGuinness was a part of WWE’s commentary team from 2016 to 2024 and was recommended to WWE by none other than Cole himself.
On a recent edition of the “Talk is Jericho” podcast, McGuinness spoke about learning under the watch of Cole and Tom Phillips. He said,
“Six fantastic years of learning under Michael Cole and Tom Phillips. If I know one hundred things about commentary on professional wrestling, probably ninety come from Michael Cole, so I’ll forever be grateful for him.”
McGuinness has since joined AEW, where he hopes to expand his WWE knowledge to provide the best commentary he can on shows. He said,
“Now that I’m here in AEW, I don’t know how you feel about it, but for me, I feel like I can take everything that I learned there and keep the good stuff, and the stuff that I don’t necessarily need to keep, I can let that go. I’ve got much more freedom now.”
In addition to commentating, McGuinness has returned to the ring as part of AEW and recently faced Bryan Danielson.
