Since its debut in 2019, AEW has expanded enormously, and Orange Cassidy discussed the company’s journey to its current status.
During a recent interview with Mike Jones, Cassidy shared his thoughts on AEW’s growth and the impressive breadth of its roster.
Cassidy said, “It’s been a very long five years if that makes any sense. Especially going through the pandemic very early on in the company’s history, we were only like three months, four months, five months in, and then we had to shut down with the pandemic. Then we, coming back, we had like a little second honeymoon phase going back out on the road and stuff, and just getting that energy back.”
He continued, “The company has grown so much, I mean I don’t know how we could fit any more phenomenal wrestlers in this roster but somehow Tony [Khan] does it.”
Nowadays, Chris Jericho has been referring to himself as the “King of New York,” and he revealed how he got this nickname.
Jericho has adopted this moniker since winning the ROH World Championship, particularly during his rivalry with Matt Cardona.
During a recent appearance on the “Gabby AF” podcast, Jericho shared the story behind the name.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On the origin of the nickname: “With King of New York, when that was suggested to me, I instantly went to Amazon and looked up New York merch. I just thought I could really have some fun with this, like just being like this clued out idiot who thinks he’s such a New Yorker, but does all these things that real New Yorkers would never do.”
On playing into the negative reactions to him: “I look at the other side of the coin: it’s kind of a challenge; let’s make this as great as we possibly can. If the story is where it needs to go, it will take you there, and all you have to do is be smart enough to realize that and just go with it.”
