Kenny Omega, who last competed in December 2023 after being diagnosed with diverticulitis and undergoing surgery, is set to return to the ring.
The former AEW World Champion will face Gabe Kidd at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5. This event will showcase NJPW, AEW, STARDOM, CMLL, and ROH wrestlers at the Tokyo Dome on January 5.
NJPW staged an angle earlier this month at Power Struggle 2024, where Omega delivered an in-ring promo and hinted at a return before brawling with Kidd backstage.
Fans have criticized Omega for returning to NJPW instead of AEW, especially as interest in AEW’s product has diminished recently.
As one of AEW’s top talents, Omega’s first match in a year could generate significant buzz for the promotion.
However, Omega recently stated that he believes AEW does not need his presence at the moment and wishes to avoid overshadowing other talents who have been actively involved.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has provided an update on Omega’s potential return to AEW.
According to the report, “Omega wants to take it slow before going back full-time with the idea of easing into a full-time schedule down the line and hoping everything holds up.”
It remains uncertain when Omega will make his return to AEW television.
