The Reason AEW Nixed Its Original WrestleDream 2024 Headliner

Bryan Danielson lost the AEW World Heavyweight Title to Jon Moxley in the main event of the AEW WrestleDream 2024 pay-per-view event at the Tacoma Dome, with the stipulation that he would have had to retire from full-time wrestling if he lost.

Following the match, Danielson was attacked and written off television by the Blackpool Combat Club, as he is expected to undergo neck surgery.

However, the original plans for WrestleDream’s main event were quite different.

While not officially confirmed, it was largely believed that Darby Allin would have defeated Danielson for the AEW World Title before the plans changed.

On the September 25th episode of Dynamite, Moxley defeated Allin to claim the latter’s guaranteed AEW World Title shot for WrestleDream 2024.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that “the Moxley turn on Danielson after his title defense over Jack Perry at All Out in Chicago changed the direction with the idea of putting as much heat as possible on Moxley and the BCC in an attempt to jump-start interest in the promotion.”

As we previously reported here on eWn, Bryan specifically chose to lose to Moxley to conclude his career as a full-time wrestler.
