John Cena will be appearing on the last episode of SmackDown in 2022. Could this be setting the table for a potential match at WrestleMania 39? A new report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter provides details on Cena’s status for ‘Mania as we get closer to showtime.

It was reported earlier this week that Cena will be filming a movie in Australia throughout February and March. The film, a comedy titled Ricky Stanicky, will also star Zac Efron. Since WrestleMania 39 is scheduled for April 1st and 2nd, 2023, this would not necessarily preclude Cena from appearing at the Showcase of the Immortals. But the filming schedule would keep him away from television time to help build a match.

In addition, Dave Meltzer went on to report that a match between Cena and Austin Theory “was absolutely an idea” for WrestleMania 39, but doesn’t know if that will ultimately pan out. With WrestleMania 39 taking place in Los Angeles, the event is expected to feature part-time talents like Cena and The Rock. Of course, plans are always subject to change.

The Rock is attempting to get a revival of the XFL off the ground, in addition to his multiple film and television commitments. Schedules for stars such as Cena and Rock could also become busy and prevent them appearing or wrestling at the show.
