WWE Hall of Famers Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels have been able to put their past issues behind them, and can now speak openly about Montreal.
In 1997, Hart was ‘screwed’ out of the WWF Championship when Michaels locked him in the Sharpshooter and Vince McMahon called for the bell to ring.
The plan had been for Hart (whose contract with the WWF was up) to retain the title and vacate it the next night on RAW before leaving for WCW.
Speaking about Montreal and his relationship with Hart, Michaels told Ariel Helwani how both men are in a better place.
“When everything is said and done, that was hard on both of us. It’s like an out-of-body experience. I have nothing in common with the person that I was then. Bret and I always talk about it – there was a friendship there before. There really was.
“You don’t want to go the rest of your life not having that healed.”
After over 12 years away, Hart returned to WWE in January 2010 and made amends with Michaels on RAW.
Since then, both men have made sporadic appearances for WWE on-screen, and Michaels works as Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative.
