Claudio Castagnoli defeated Jonathan Gresham at ROH’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view event to become ROH World Heavyweight Champion. The Swiss Superman carried his momentum from his AEW debut to the ROH pay-per-view and finally became a world champion.
Although Claudio has now turned his attention to being the best on AEW and ROH, he still has some things he wishes he would’ve done in WWE.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet at this past weekend’s Starrcast V event, Castagnoli discussed never winning the world title in WWE and why he believes momentum plays a massive role in someone reaching the pinnacle in the company.
“Yes, It’s all about building momentum. I feel I created that momentum a lot of times with the fans.”
“That natural thing, you’ve seen that with them. The last time that really happened was with Becky. Becky got red-hot and the fans made her undeniable. I feel I was on that verge a couple of times where the crowd was with me, my stuff was going awesome, and it was, ‘We’re going in this direction now.’ Okay, back to square one. That happened a bunch of times. In the end, it all led to this. A lot of stuff in life is about the journey.”
Claudio’s first significant singles WWE World Championship match on pay-per-view was against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania: Backlash last year. The match with Reigns would also be his only singles WWE World Championship match in his tenure with the company.
