AEW World Champion CM Punk announced on Friday night’s live episode of AEW Rampage that he’s injured and will require surgery. As we reported earlier today here on eWn, CM Punk was complaining about suffering a foot injury at Wednesday night’s Dynamite TV tapings.
During his promo segment, Punk said the good news is that he can still come back “bigger, faster, stronger, and hungrier” than before and will prove why he’s the best in the world. Punk said he’s going to continue until the wheels fall off and they haven’t fallen off yet – it just so happens that one of them is broken.
Punk said he offered to drop the AEW World Title, but AEW President Tony Khan said he believes in him, and that this is just a bump in the road.
It was later confirmed by Chris Jericho on commentary that CM Punk will remain AEW World Champion, but there will also be an Interim Champion crowned while he’s out of action. This will begin to play out on next Wednesday night’s episode of AEW Dynamite.
We’ll see a battle royal kick off Wednesday night’s episode of Dynamite. The winner of that match will go on to face Jon Moxley in the main event later in the night. The winner of that bout will then go on to compete at Forbidden Door against an as-yet-unnamed opponent to crown the Interim Champion. The AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view event takes place on June 26th in Chicago, IL.
Eventually, the two titles will be combined once CM Punk is able to return from surgery and rehab. This was all very confusing and it seemed like changes were being made on the fly during the live broadcast.
As many of you know, Tony Khan often books long-term so these changes came at the very last minute and will lead to lots of changes for what he had originally planned in the coming weeks and months ahead. It remains to be seen how long CM Punk will be out of action.
