The main event of WrestleMania 39 saw Roman Reigns retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship over Cody Rhodes to the utter shock and dismay of the WWE Universe.
According to a report from Fightful Select, the outcome of the main event at WrestleMania 39 (Night Two) was not a last-minute decision, but rather a plan that had been in the works for some time. Roman Reigns was always intended to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, and Cody Rhodes was never intended to win.
Initially, there were ideas pitched for Cody to face John Cena instead of Reigns, but plans were put into motion for Cody to main event once Vince McMahon was no longer in charge of creative.
Despite some backstage discussion and defense of the idea of Roman winning, the finish of the match had been decided weeks prior, with only select individuals made aware of it. It’s unknown when talent was informed. The interference plan was also not given to talent, referees or ringside staff until the day before the event, and the involvement of several people was unknown.
Sources claim that Vince McMahon was not involved in the decision.
