Veteran wrestling theme song producer Jim Johnston has said that wrestling is lacking big stars due to “mediocre” themes.

Johnston worked with WWE for close to 32 years and created many of the promotion’s most beloved songs before his departure in 2017.

During a recent appearance on the “Insight with Chris Van Vliet” podcast, Johnston said neither WWE nor AEW have legitimate stars, thanks in part to the music.

“The music now, in WWE and in AEW, I think it’s… sorry this is mean, it’s all homogenous, and it’s mediocre and doesn’t have anything to do with the characters, and I think that’s why there are less big stars.”

Johnston added that despite his lengthy run with WWE, he did not have a contract with the company until they were listed as a publicly traded company in 1999.
