Some in WWE pushed for Sami Zayn to dethrone Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at the recent Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event.
At this week’s event in Montreal, Zayn came up short against the Tribal Chief in the Canadian’s first one-on-one World Championship opportunity at a Premium Live Event.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said that “higher-ups” pushed for a title change, but the ideas were shot down.
Speaking about WrestleMania 39, which will see Reigns defend against Cody Rhodes, Meltzer said,
“I know what the plan was as of, even a week ago, and it was Roman and Cody. It’s not Sami being thrown in.”
It is believed that Zayn and Kevin Owens will challenge for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania 39.
