Tommaso Ciampa’s neck injury clearly threw some WWE plans out of whack.
Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano were called up to the WWE main roster, alongside Aleister Black and Ricochet, and competed in two successful tag team outings.
Over on NXT, Gargano turned on Tommaso after they lost their match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. It was believed that the two would meet at NXT takeover New York and finally settle their 2-year long rivalry.
However, with Tommaso out of action, Johnny is now set to battle Adam Cole in a 2 out of 3 Falls match to crown the new NXT Champion.
On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer is reporting that a 2 out of 3 Falls match would have been the plan for Gargano and Ciampa, with Gargano targeting the incumbent NXT Champion’s neck, because it was well known that he would need surgery. However, it appears that the injury was too severe and they could not prolong it anymore.
