It was Triple H’s decision for the RAW and SmackDown Tag Team Championships to be defended separately, despite the titles being unified last year.
In May 2022, The Usos defeated RK-Bro to win all the gold, in what was promoted as a title unification match.
Recently, WWE has begun the process of de-unifying the titles, with the Judgment Day being crowned the number-one contenders for only the RAW Tag Team gold.
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it is reported that WWE’s Head of Creative Triple H was the one who made this call. Dave Meltzer wrote,
“The idea right now on the tag team front is that there are two sets of belts. The Usos are champions but the Raw and Smackdown belts are different. This is a new Paul Levesque move and it does allow the Usos to lose one set of belts and keep the other.
“It was explained to me that the hope is it makes fans think it’s more likely somebody beats them for one set of belts.”
The Usos will defend the RAW Tag Team Championships on next week’s 30th anniversary of Monday Night RAW.
A tournament to determine the next challengers for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships will begin on tonight’s show.
