In a recent appearance on the “Oh… You Didn’t Know?” podcast, former WWE head writer Vince Russo offered his candid perspective on the current state of the company’s creative direction, expressed his admiration and desire to work with Bray Wyatt, writing “at the greatness of” the Superstars from the Attitude Era’s level, and more.
According to Russo, many talented individuals are being underutilized, and he feels that some simple changes could enhance their performances.
“I’m being honest because I feel — my opinion — there are people that are being underutilized and I think it’s like simple things and I mean, bro, there are a lot of characters I like on the show where I just sit there and I say, ‘God, I just wish I could.’”
Discussing whom he’d like to work with the most in WWE today, Russo expressed his profound admiration for Bray Wyatt, acknowledging him as a creative genius and revealing that he has been eager to work with him for a long time.
“At the top of my list — I mean, bro has been on the top of my list for a long time, and he doesn’t need Vince Russo writing for him — but I think Bray’s a freaking genius.”
Despite being credited with writing for one of the greatest wrestling rosters ever, Vince Russo also highlighted the significant challenge of maintaining the high standards required to engage and entertain fans on a weekly basis. In his view, it is not enough to simply have a talented roster; one must consistently write at the level of their greatness to keep fans invested in their stories. He said,
“What they always hit me with is, ‘Oh, Vince, you were a successful writer but look at the roster you had,’ and what they don’t understand is… I worked with a great roster. I worked with great individuals, but what they don’t understand is, I had to feed them every week, so I had to write at the greatness of their level.”
