WWE has issued a statement regarding the use of footage of the Auschwitz concentration camp during last weekend’s WrestleMania 39 pay-per-view event.
For the promo hyping the match between Rey and Dominik Mysterio, footage of the camp was used to highlight Dominik’s ex-con character.
The use of the footage has been condemned, with the Auschwitz Memorial Museum branding WWE “shameless” over the incident.
In a statement to the Washington Post, WWE said the following:
“We had no knowledge of what was depicted. As soon as we learned, it was removed immediately.”
Rey defeated Dominik at WrestleMania 39 (Night One) in a 15-minute match.
