As we reported earlier here on eWn, WWE is reviving the iconic winged eagle title belt for a special moment at this Saturday’s Saturday Night’s Main Event show.
This event, which will air live on NBC and Peacock, will feature Cody Rhodes defending his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Kevin Owens. The special gift from Triple H, which is believed to be the winged eagle belt, will make an appearance “for one night only.”
Cody Rhodes has been a vocal advocate for bringing back the classic winged eagle title, which originally debuted in 1988 and was used until 1998. Fightful Select is reporting that discussions surrounding the return of this classic belt have been ongoing, and Rhodes has been particularly instrumental in pushing for its revival. It’s also been noted that other WWE talents have supported the idea of bringing back vintage title designs, and this push could explain why WWE’s recent Tag Team Title belts carry a more classic aesthetic.
WWE has also embraced the idea of nostalgia marketing by incorporating classic title designs like the winged eagle and the Big Gold Belt, while rebranding them with modern WWE logos for commercial and promotional purposes.
