CM Punk knows how to work as a face and a heel, but he recognizes that there can be issues when working as a villain with modern-day fans.

On a recent edition of “The Rich Eisen Show” podcast, Punk said that it’s far too easy for a heel to not truly be a villain in the modern day. He said,

“If your role is to be ‘the bad guy,’ you have to be this dragon for the good guy to slay. I think where you can maybe falter is thinking ‘Oh, there’s pockets of people that are cheering me. I want them to cheer me.’ When I’m a bad guy, I do not want people to cheer me. I don’t.”

Punk also reflected on how he is able to turn a message from a good guy into a bad guy’s role, as seen with his Straight Edge Society. He said,

“I can walk into a high school and talk to kids about not doing drugs and I’m a good guy, or I can walk into an arena, sold out, and talk to people about not doing drugs and I’m a bad guy. Preachy, people don’t like it. Nobody likes a finger wagged in their face.”

Whether as a face or a heel, Punk won’t be appearing for WWE for the time being as he shared during this week’s episode of RAW.

Punk is expected to miss next month’s Crown Jewel pay-per-view but is expected to be a part of Survivor Series: WarGames in Vancouver.
