WWE’s Attitude Era saw plenty of on-screen romances, but one pairing didn’t appeal to Jim Ross, despite what he’d say on commentary.
In 1999, Stephanie McMahon and Test embarked on a romance that would result in Test asking the boss’ daughter to marry her.
On a recent edition of his “Grilling JR” podcast, Ross, who was a vocal supporter of the pair on commentary, shared his true thoughts.
“It helped make Stephanie a bigger star because she got more screen time, and she’s a great performer. She’s a much better performer than was Test, we discover Test had limited charisma… he had a great look, nice guy, but charisma was not his forte.
“It showed in their scenes where they both had equal parts, she stood out, and I think that’s what we discovered, that she was a star and we could utilize her more if we chose to. All that marriage stuff, and engagements, and all that s**t, I never — I didn’t think the people believed it and I didn’t. I wasn’t a big fan of it, to be honest.”
The angle would briefly see Stephanie McMahon suffer amnesia after being struck with a bin by the British Bulldog, leaving Test to win her over again.
The relationship ended in late 1999 during the couple’s wedding when Triple H revealed that he had secretly wedded McMahon at a drive-thru chapel.
McMahon would turn heel and align with Triple H that December and the pair tied the knot for real in late 2003.
