The WWE Tag Team Championships changed hands on the July 5, 2024 edition of WWE SmackDown!
A-Town Down Under had been feuding with #DIY for several weeks, in part with Johnny Gargano trying to impart some words of wisdom to his former teammate and now adversary, Austin Theory, saying that Grayson Waller doesn’t have his back the way he should (like how Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa are as a unit).
Prior to the match, #DIY cut a quick promo to the ring about how Toronto is special to them and their careers. “Eight years ago, we walked into this arena and we walked out NXT tag team champions. That night, Toronto made #DIY.” said Tommaso Ciampa.
“Two years ago, I returned to WWE in this arena. I chose this place because it’s become like a second home to me and Tommaso. But tonight isn’t about the past.”
“It’s about tonight. It’s about capturing lightning in a bottle for the second time, and becoming WWE tag team champions.”
“Toronto, let’s go!”
Clearly hyped up, Gargano and Ciampa were able to force a double submission over the tag team champions, with a simultaneous Gargano Escape and a Sicilian Stretch locked in at the same time.
Both Austin Theory and Grayson Waller tapped out together, making it as definitive of a victory as they could get.
This is the first gold Ciampa and Gargano have achieved on the main roster and a long time coming for two of NXT’s shining stars.
