Everyone wants in on John Cena’s retirement tour, from Matt Cardona to CM Punk to The Miz to even Rob Van Dam.

On a recent edition of his “1 Of A Kind” podcast, when the subject of John Cena’s retirement came up, and the prospect of having another classic similar to their main event at ECW One Night Stand 2006, the WWE Hall of Famer had this to say:

“I hope they bring me in for a rematch with Cena. That would be super cool. I don’t know if they know, but I know I could have that same match, absolutely.”

Of course, the situation would be starkly different this time around, with the focus on celebrating Cena (#10 on WWE’s list of RVD’s greatest opponents) instead of RVD cashing in a Money in the Bank contract to beat Cena for the WWE Championship with the Hammerstein Ballroom rabidly against The Franchise Player.

Nevertheless, RVD praised Cena for his response to that crowd that night. He said,

“He was able to pull the strings with the crowd and he knew going out there that he was going to be up against a crowd that that hated him. A really vocal, physical, most opinionated crowd ever, but he was ready for it, and he handled it great, and I enjoyed working with him. And also he was very, very smug.”

Rob Van Dam hasn’t competed for WWE since August 26, 2014 when he defeated Seth Rollins by count out on an episode of WWE Main Event. However, he’s remained active on sporadic occasions, most recently wrestling on AEW Rampage defeating Isiah Kassidy, Komander and Lee Johnson on April 20, 2024.
