The New York Times covered the passing of Sabu. TMZ, Entertainment Tonight, and many others also covered the story.
Joey Janela sparked controversy during a recent interview with “Uncrowned,” where he discussed Sabu’s physical condition ahead of their match. In the interview — Janela stated that kratom was provided to Sabu to help him get through the match. Sabu had previously credited kratom as instrumental in his recovery from opioid addiction. The drug is legal in some states, while illegal in others.
Tragically, Sabu passed away a few weeks after the match. However, there is no indication that the bout or anything discussed in the interview had any connection to his passing. In fact, Sabu appeared at WrestleCon shortly afterward.
Fightful Select is reporting that the interview was conducted shortly after the match, and that Janela admitted to embellishing aspects of the story to contribute to the “lore” surrounding Sabu.
