Shawn Michaels and AJ Styles would have delivered a barnburner in the ring, had the WWE Hall of Famer not turned down the dream showdown.
Michaels retired from in-ring competition in 2010 but wrestled one more time as part of a WWE show in Saudi Arabia in 2018.
During a recent interview with “Inside The Ropes,” Michaels confirmed the long-standing rumors that a match with Styles was once considered. He said,
“The only ones that have ever actually been asked by the company were Taker and AJ Styles. That’s the only time anybody ever formally, you know, mentioned it, but I turned it down.”
Michaels also said that, despite rumors of a match with his protege Shawn Michaels, a match was never put forward in WWE. He said,
“There was never, nobody ever, ever, ever, going to stand and put any consideration into Daniel Bryan or anybody else in all the years I’ve been retired. From a company standpoint, they’ve always known, you know, I retired.”
