Could the “Winged Eagle” design of the WWE Championship be making its return, and as soon as this Saturday? At least, it could be for a one-off appearance.
That is what is at least teased from reliable scoopster WrestleVotes, who just tweeted out the following:
Cody Rhodes walking out on NBC during Saturday Night’s Main Event with the classic “winged eagle” WWE Championship should be a cinematic masterpiece—one that hits home for fans who grew up on the OG SNME.

In fact, Triple H and Cody Rhodes have gone so far as to tease that for one night only, The American Nightmare is going to sport the old school, classic design as part of a throwback to fit the retro vibe of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event:

Cody Rhodes has long been pitching the return of the Winged Eagle design in various interviews, and while it has always seemed unlikely the company would deviate from the current design (after all, the WWE logo is prominent on the current belt, and there’s a giant statue of that right outside the headquarters facility), it does seem as though Cody and fans will be able to play with that title for at least this one night.
Also, it’s important to keep in mind that there have been instances in the past where the reception to something has been so positive that they’ve course-corrected and brought something back. There’s no telling if this could lead to the actual return of the Winged Eagle belt in common practice. It’s at least more of a likelihood now than ever before, which is exciting news.
