Perhaps former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick could play in the XFL’s inaugural season next year. Sporting News reports that an XFL spokesman confirmed that the league has spoken to the former San Francisco 49’ers signal caller. Discussions took place this past fall. The XFL declined to divulge details behind the contract talks.
However, the report suggests sources claim Kaepernick wanted a ridiculous $20 million to play for the new spring league. Kaepernick’s attorney, Mark Geragos, did not respond to an email from Sporting News seeking comment. Kaepernick had similar talks with the new Alliance of American Football (AAF) league before their launch this year. Kaepernick was seeking a similar payday from the startup league.
The eight-team XFL is looking to pay quarterbacks $250,000 a season to start things off in 2020. Kaepernick making $20 million a season, which isn’t an uncommon number in the NFL, in the first season of the XFL is extremely unlikely.
