He was the leader of NXT stable The Undisputed Era, alongside Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, and Roderick Strong. The group split up at NXT Vengeance Day 2021, when Cole turned on Kyle O’Reilly.
In WWE, Cole is the first-ever NXT North American Champion and a former NXT Tag Team Champion; he held both titles concurrently in April 2018, making him the first double champion in NXT history. He is also the co-winner of the 2018 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic with O’Reilly. On June 1, Cole won the NXT Championship, where his reign became the longest in the promotion’s history at 403 days; winning the title also made Cole the second NXT Triple Crown Champion.
Before signing with WWE in 2017, he was mostly known for his eight-year tenure with Ring of Honor (ROH) where he became the first-ever three-time ROH World Champion. In addition, he is a one-time ROH World Television Champion, and the winner of the 2014 ROH Survival of the Fittest tournament.
Cole has also wrestled for several independent promotions, including Chikara, Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), where he is a former CZW World Junior Heavyweight Champion, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), where he was a former PWG World Champion; he holds the records for longest reigns for both titles. He also worked in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he was part of the Bullet Club stable.
After losing to Kyle O’Reilly at NXT TakeOver 36, Cole disappeared from TV. He made his AEW debut at All Out 2021. After teasing a feud with The Elite, he showed his true colors by siding with his friends. He later suffered a near career ending injury that sidelined him for months.
Upon returning, he & MJF were paired together, despite his ambition to become the AEW World Champion. At the record breaking AEW All In 2023 PPV from London in Wembley Stadium, he won the ROH World Tag Team Championship with MJF, becoming a ROH Triple Crown Champion, but would then lose an AEW World title match to his partner in the main event.
