After graduating college, Sarkodie-Mensah decided to pursue a professional wrestling career. He began performing on the New England independent circuit as a Jamaican wrestler by the name of Kofi Nahaje Kingston.
After signing a developmental deal with WWE in 2007, he shortened his ring name to “Kofi Kingston”. Kingston debuted in WWE in 2008 using the same Jamaican character as he did on the independent circuit. In late 2009, he stopped being billed from Jamaica and dropped the accent although he kept his ring name. He then started being billed from his home country of Ghana.
Kingston has been a babyface (heroic character) for almost the entirety of his WWE career with the exception of a few months spent as a heel (villainous character) near the start of his run with The New Day. He is a four-time Intercontinental Champion, a three-time United States Champion and an eight-time world tag team champion.
His second Raw Tag Team Championship reign as a part of The New Day is the longest reign for any tag team title in WWE history and Kingston himself holds the record for cumulative days spent as a Tag Team Champion within WWE. He is also known for his innovative ways of suspending his elimination from battle royal and Royal Rumble matches.
At Wrestlemania 35, Kofi Kingston did the unthinkable. In his first WWE title match in 11 years, he defeated Daniel Bryan to become WWE Champion, making him a Triple Crown & Grand Slam Champion in the process. At NXT Deadline in December 2022, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods won the NXT Tag Team titles, making The New Day the third WWE Triple Crown Tag Team Champions.
