Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Zero Hour Pre-Show
- The first half hour of the pre-show was just running down the card.
- Now, we’re starting 7pm with Tony Khan paying tribute to Antonio Inoki.
- We’re starting off with the eight-person mixed tag team match. Kojima gets the pin for his team.
- Next up is Josh Barnett against Claudio Castagnoli. Jon Moxley is ringside on commentary providing a lot of context for this match. That’s really upping its value for me. He’s talking about how much he’s trained with Barnett and how this match came about and all.
- Claudio won by pinfall. After the match, Barnett grabbed a mic and praised Castagnoli, and said in so many words that they need to do this again.
- Next up is Luchasaurus against Nick Wayne, following a video package hyping up the TNT title match. Major support for Wayne being the hometown boy, naturally.
- Home field advantage doesn’t matter. Luchasaurus gets the win.
- Good rap from Max Caster for The Acclaimed’s entrance.
- The Acclaimed get the win and retain their titles to end the pre-show.
ROH World Tag Team Championship 2-on-1 Handicap Match: MJF (c) vs. The Righteous
- I love this babyface MJF character. Everything from the show of respect leading into an eye poke to his pre-match promo of saying he’ll bodyslam Dutch, as if he’s some grappler from decades ago where that’s his big move.
- Playful selling here and there. MJF is just fun to watch.
- The champion retains even with the numbers against him.
Singles Match for the ROH World Championship and NJPW Strong Openweight Championship: Eddie Kingston (c) vs. Katsuyori Shibata
- Take a sip every time there’s a chop in this match.
- Unfortunately, I can’t comment on this match as I missed almost the entirety of it. I really hope it was good and I’ll have to try to go back and check it out later after the show.
AEW TBS Championship Match: Kris Statlander (c) vs. Julia Hart
- Realistically, if Julia Hart has been on a winning streak and the last person to beat her was Kris Statlander, this should be a Statlander win. That’s what I’m expecting, at least.
- They’re doing a good job having an even contest despite how Stat has the size advantage.
- I’ll admit, I was critical of the Hart transition into House of Black. I thought she had more going for her with the cheerleader gimmick. Seeing the dissolution of The Varsity Blonds and how much more her career has advanced since then, I can admit I was wrong. This works for Hart.
- Nice moonsault from Hart, with Statlander putting her foot on the ropes to break the count.
- Statlander retains with a pinfall following two tombstone piledrivers. Good match.
AEW World Tag Team Championship No. 1 Contender’s Four-Way Match: The Young Bucks vs. The Gunns vs. The Lucha Brothers vs. Orange Cassidy and Hook
- Gotta love Orange Cassidy. Just in general. He hasn’t done anything yet, but I feel like I should say that every time he appears.
- Wow. That series of suplex reversals from Matt Jackson and Hook was really nice.
- Not surprisingly, this match is a series of good moves from one person to the next, in quick fashion. Its frenetic pace was expected and it’s been fun.
- Bucks get the win over Penta with a BTE Trigger.
“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Swerve Strickland
- Despite being the definitive heel here, Swerve is getting the crowd’s support since he’s from the area.
- They pretty much have to give Swerve the win. Even though the crowd is a bit split, he’s also the one who needs to get the elevation more, seeing as how Page has been world champion already.
- Jeeez, the way Swerve had Page’s arm bent backwards and stomped on it looked gnarly.
- Strickland hits a 450 on the damaged arm. Near-fall.
- Hangman hits a Buckshot Lariat, but falls backward in pain from his arm and can’t capitalize on a cover quickly enough. Prince Nana broke up the pin by putting Swerve’s foot on the ropes and the referee caught him, so Nana’s thrown out from ringside.
- Page goes for another Buckshot Lariat, but Swerve hits him with Prince Nana’s crown while the referee’s back is turned dealing with Nana. Only a two-count, though.
- Swerve wins with a JML Driver. Very good match.
Ricky Starks vs. Wheeler Yuta
- Going with another singles match next? I was assuming one of the tag matches would be following Page/Strickland and then this would come after FTR/AO or the trios match.
- Oh good. Mox is back on commentary. Hopefully, he adds more flavor to this match like he did Claudio vs Barnett.
- The pyro and the lighting for Starks seems a step up tonight. Or is it just me? I still think once his deal is up, that he might end up going to WWE, though.
- What the hell was that powerbomb from Starks? How did he land on his own neck? Yikes. Be careful, man!
- Thumbs up on this match. Good job.
Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
- I didn’t update this throughout as I wanted to have my eyes glued to the screen. I’m glad that I did that. This was a fantastic match. Definitely go back and check it out if you missed it. It’s Match of the Year list potential. Awesome.
Trios Match: Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi vs. The Don Callis Family (Sammy Guevara, Will Ospreay and Konosuke Takeshita)
- “Fuck you, Callis” is the top chant at the start of this.
- You know the score. These are talented guys. Pretty much everything they’re doing in the ring is interesting from the onset.
- How can you dislike Sammy Guevara? He’s so good and he’s such a natural heel. Love having him even pop up on Taz’s headset to talk some trash.
- This match broke down (as per typical trios matches) and just ended up being 20+ minutes of great action.
- Huge fan of the overall finish here. Not only is it a good decision for Guevara to pin Jericho, but by having all the heels distracting Aubrey Edwards and holding people back while Don Callis hit Jericho with the bat is a great way to keep the heat on The Don Callis Family.
AEW World Tag Team Championship Match: FTR (c) vs. Aussie Open
- Like I’ve been saying, if you put a match like this on the card in the 80s, it blows everything out of the water. But on an event where everything is good, I’m not sure what there is to talk about. Solid match. The right team won. FTR vs Young Bucks IV will be great, naturally, whenever that happens.
2-Out-of-3 Falls AEW TNT Championship Match: Christian Cage (c) vs. Darby Allin
- Okay everyone. Last chance to drop it in the comments. How is Adam Copeland popping up? Or are you thinking Edge isn’t actually appearing here?
- First fall goes to Darby Allin for rolling up Christian Cage.
- God damn. There’s something like 4 attempts to slam Darby onto the steel steps. That was gnarly. Stop trying to end your career early, Darby!
- Second fall goes to Christian via count out.
- Now, they’re pulling out a stretcher.
- Christian crashes on top of Darby (on the stretcher) with a frog splash.
- He’s exposed the wood from the ring and we’ve seen all sorts of maneuvers on there. A Killswitch, Scorpion Death Drop, Coffin Drop, sunset flip powerbomb.
- Christian inadvertently spears the referee. Nick Wayne comes out to help snatch the TNT Championship from Christian. Uh oh, he’s totally going to turn on Darby, isn’t he?
- There it is! Wayne nails Darby in the head with the belt!
- Christian scores the third fall and he’s retained the title.
- After the match, Cage and Wayne continue to double-team Allin.
- Out comes Sting. I’m assuming Luchasaurus is next and then Edge?
- Here’s Luchasaurus on cue. The 3-on-1 beat down is too much for Sting. Until, of course…wait for it…
- The lights go out. “Our feature presentation” pops up on the screen. Someone’s driving a car. “You think you know me.” It’s a different version, but he has the normal version of Metalingus! Edge is here!
- He teases potentially giving Sting a con-chair-to, but takes out the heels instead.
