WWE RAW (1/22/2024)
Seth Rollins let us know he has seriously injured his knee. When he got to the back after his match with Jinder Mahal, he felt that he wouldn’t be back for a long time. He thought it might be a real possibility that he misses WrestleMania. Seth says he has a grade 2 tear in his MCL, and the doctors are telling him that with surgery it could take 3 or 4 months to recover. If it was up to him, he would be back next week, but unfortunately he can’t say no. He is taking it day-by-day, week-by-week… Gunther makes his entrance.
Gunther says he and Seth have been avoiding each other for a while, so he is here to let him know what he thinks. He came here to tell him that he was a workhorse champion fighting for every victory. He appreciates Seth bringing honor to a championship everyone can be proud of… just like him. It pulls on his heart strings to see him like this, and honestly makes him sad. Rollins says he should have let him finish. He doesn’t care what the doctors tell him, or how hard he has to rehab, he will keep his promise and take this title to WrestleMania.
He will do everything to leave WrestleMania as World Heavyweight Champion. Gunther admires that. He respects that a lot, because he would do the same thing. He reminds him a lot of himself. So, from one great champion to another great champion, on Sunday, he is going to win the Royal Rumble. And he is going to pick Rollins as his opponent for WrestleMania. But with all due respect, he will target his knee, his back, and everything that is not 100%, so he can beat him and become World Heavyweight Champion.
Seth Rollins appreciates his honesty. He can challenge him, but remember one thing, remember who he is going after. Gunther tells him to remember who is coming after him. They shake hands. Just as Gunther leaves the ring, The New Day blindsides Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci.
#1. The New Day’s Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods vs. Imperium’s Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci – Winners: Double Countout
The fight continues after the bell. Kaiser grabs a steel chair and almost hits a held Kingston, but Woods saves his friend. All four men fight until they all crash through some tables.
#2. Ivy Nile (w/ Maxxine Dupri) vs. Valhalla – Winner: Ivy Nile
After a passionate promo from New Day on Imperium, Kofi Kingston challenges Gunther to an IC title match for next week.
Nia Jax understands why Rhea Ripley and Becky Lynch want to face each other at WrestleMania. Any path with Nia Jax in it, results in both of them getting squashed. At the Royal Rumble, she will squash both of their dreams. Becky Lynch’s music hits. She tells him to shut up, and she will lose at the Royal Rumble. Bayley interrupts the party. How nice is this reunion? She is going to WrestleMania. This quickly turns in to a fight between the three, ending with Nia Jax landing a leg drop on Bayley. She has the momentum going in to the Royal Rumble.
#3. The Miz vs. Dominik Mysterio (w/ Judgment Day) – Winner: Dominik Mysterio with the Frog Splash
DIY saves The Miz from a beatdown. Backstage, R-Truth tries to give Damian Priest more money from the merchandise sales, but he is more interested in sending Drew McIntyre a serious message.
#4. Chad Gable vs. Ivar – Winner: Ivar
CM Punk and Cody Rhodes are scheduled to talk face-to-face in the ring. Punk says they have been on very different paths to get here, so let’s enjoy this moment. Cody asks Punk what he wants to talk about. He wants to talk about his Dad. He has never told this story before, but in 2007, Dusty Rhodes called him to say that he is sending his son to OVW.
He asked Punk to take care of his kid, and he had to say yes. It was not a hard job. He didn’t get in to any trouble. He wanted Cody grow from a preliminary wrestler, in to a main event caliber superstar. Punk is proud of him. On Saturday, he feels like he is breaking a promise. When that bell rings on Saturday in the Royal Rumble, he will be looking for him. CM Punk is going to win the Rumble and main event WrestleMania.
Cody says he is not alone. He knows that many people see Dusty when they see him. Since he left here, he tried not to be in the shadow to be his own man. Punk treated him well as a rookie, and he considers him a friend, but in the Rumble there are no friends. What about Sunday morning? Punk can separate business from personal, but Cody was born in this business. Punk says Cody has got out of the shadow with flying colors.
They have been down different paths with similar goals. Punk says his Dad was an electrician, so you could say that he is more of an American Dream than he is. Cody Rhodes wants to talk about the pipebomb. He inspired countless talents for a generation, but then he left, and he really left. He didn’t care who picked up the torch, but he did. Everything he spoke about, Cody literally did. If you think about it, that makes him more CM Punk than him. It’s getting a little hot in here.
Punk congratulates Cody on gracing the cover of the new video game. He is about to finish the story… but wait, here comes a bigger superstar who hasn’t been around for a while, to come and take it away from him. Cody says he may be right, but he can only go forward, and that direction is through Punk. They have a tense stare down and leave it like that.
#5. Indi Hartwell & Candice LeRae vs. Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark – Winners: Baszler & Stark
Damage CTRL send a message by attacking the tag team champions, who had been at ringside watching the previous match.
Jinder Mahal tells Adam Pearce that he is the most talked about superstar in 2024, so he wants to talk business.
