Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

2023 SummerSlam banner

Ricochet vs. Logan Paul

  • This is opening SummerSlam so that Paul can take a flight to then attend Jake Paul’s fight later in the night. Even still, I think it’ll be a good opener.
  • Whether it’s piped in noise or legit, the crowd at least sounds like they’re pumped for this. Heat for Logan Paul and all.
  • Logan Paul’s running powerslam is spoken of by the commentary as a direct shot at Braun Strowman for being Ricochet’s former tag team member. Good way to twist it in that direction.
  • Ricochet hits a People’s Elbow type moonsault after Logan Paul had hit a leg drop that he supposedly calls “The Hogan Paul” which is an awful name.
  • Spanish Fly on the outside was good, as was Paul’s flip to the outside.
  • Pretty much everything Paul does looks natural as if he’s trained just as long, if not longer, than most of the roster. Hate him all you want, you have to give him credit for being as talented as he is.
  • Great moonsault into a tornado DDT from Paul.
  • Paul gets his knees up perfectly to block Ricochet’s Shooting Star Press without having his knees too sharp of an angle. Nice.
  • Springboard frog splash from Paul gets a thumbs up from me, too.
  • Great sequence from Ricochet ending with a springboard moonsault of his own.
  • One of Paul’s buddies hands him some brass knuckles while the referee wasn’t looking. There’s the win for Paul.
  • Admittedly, they didn’t have any show-stealing moments in this match that will be on the highlight reel like they’ve done before. Instead, they just had a really good match from bell to bell. In a way, I prefer that.

Sheamus arrived earlier today in a monster truck. Why? I guess the answer is “why not?”

Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar

  • Cody starts with a few trademark Beautiful Disaster kicks, which don’t faze Brock all that much.
  • We’re firmly in the “series of suplexes” portion of the match, with Cody just taking punishment for a while.
  • After a number of near count-outs, Lesnar hits Cody with an F5 on the outside. Rhodes still gets back in at 9.
  • Lesnar sends Rhodes through the commentary table with another F5.
  • Cody just beats the count at 9 again.
  • Knowing WWE, they’ll probably have Cody lose this, and they’ll think that telling the story of him always getting back up until he just doesn’t anymore is as good as a win.
  • Cody went to use the steel steps, but Lesnar kicked them away. Rhodes is able to send Lesnar into the ring post a few times and then hit him with the steps. Why is this not a DQ? Because.
  • Rhodes hits another BD kick, followed by a Cody Cutter. Followed by another Cody Cutter in springboard top rope fashion. Not good enough for a 3-count.
  • Cody goes for a Cross Rhodes, but Lesnar reverses into a kimura lock.
  • A minute or so later, Lesnar gets sent into the exposed turnbuckle for more work on his shoulder, and Cody puts HIM in a kimura lock.
  • Lesnar breaks out of it.
  • Cody hits 3 Cross Rhodes for the win. Another good match.
  • Brock offers a handshake to Cody after the match, pulls him in for a hug, gives him another handshake and…oh wow, just leaves. No F-5.

Slim Jim SummerSlam Battle Royal

  • Just as the bell rings, MVP pops up to introduce that Omos is also joining the match.
  • Everyone starts fighting before he even gets into the ring.
  • Omos tosses out Apollo Crews first. He then takes JD McDonagh out.
  • Omos takes out Rick Boogs next.
  • Everyone gangs up on Omos. All three of the Brawling Brutes go for the 10 Beats, but can’t pull it off.
  • Omos breaks away from everyone.
  • Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci take out Otis.
  • Vinci is tossed out by Chad Gable.
  • Both of The Viking Raiders are gone from Tommaso Ciampa. Nakamura as well. But then, Bronson Reed takes out Ciampa.
  • Ridge Holland is out via Austin Theory. Same for Cameron Grimes by Theory. Then, Theory gets clotheslined over by Santos Escobar, who then gets taken out by Karrion Kross.
  • Gable takes out Kaiser.
  • Omos takes out The Broserweights (Butch and Matt Riddle) together.
  • Everyone gangs up on Omos and they manage to eliminate him. It took 8 people, if I’m counting correctly. We’re down to The Miz, Grayson Waller (working together), AJ Styles, Sheamus, LA Knight, Kross, Reed and Gable.
  • Miz is eliminated by Knight.
  • Waller is eliminated by Sheamus.
  • Kross is out via Styles.
  • Reed sends Gable out. Down to the final 4 (Reed, Knight, Sheamus and Styles)
  • Reed is eliminated by Knight.
  • Kross holds Styles down to screw him over. Sheamus hits AJ with a Brogue Kick to eliminate him. Our final two are Sheamus and Knight, who started this whole thing on SmackDown.
  • LA Knight jumps up to the top rope and gives Sheamus a belly-to-belly suplex. He follows it with a clothesline and LA Knight wins the SummerSlam Battle Royal! YEAH!!

MMA Rules Match: Ronda Rousey vs. Shayna Baszler

  • Time for the baddest makeup on the planet fight.
  • This should have been a Fight Pit match to make it seem even more like a UFC style bout.
  • That might have helped out with the crowd that is waning in energy.
  • This is slow. That’s not helping offset the boos.
  • Trainers checking on Baszler. Rousey throws them aside. Shayna gets back to her feet, throws her mouth guard and now they’re exchanging blows.
  • Rousey gets choked out. Shayna wins via technical submission. This was largely boring in my mind.

Intercontinental Championship Match: Gunther (c) vs. Drew McIntyre

  • Who else is rooting for Gunther?
  • Good comment I just saw on Twitter saying “It’s dinner time and chops are on the menu.”
  • Close call after McIntyre slams Gunther with a powerbomb followed by a Future Shock DDT.
  • Drew does his front flip over the top rope. Always impressive.
  • Claymore is avoided. Gunther powerbombs McIntyre for a two-count. He gets another 2 after a splash from the top rope.
  • Drew gets in a Claymore, but Gunther kicks out. By now, they have a “this is awesome” chant from the audience.
  • Oof. McIntyre gets crotched on the top rope, then assaulted until a powerbomb takes him out for good. Gunther retains by pinfall and the right decision was made. On to September and Honky Tonk Man’s record! SummerSlam is checked off. Just get past Payback pretty much and the record is sealed.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Seth “Freakin” Rollins (c) vs. Finn Bálor

  • Rollins has on the same vest that he had 7 years ago to play some mind games.
  • No other members of Judgment Day are out for this match (at least at the start).
  • Back and forth action. Nothing too much to talk about.
  • Balor throws Rollins into the security barricade, trying to injure him with the same thing that took him out in their universal title match.
  • Damian Priest is on his way down to the ring, briefcase in-hand.
  • Rollins barely kicks out of a Pedigree after Priest had also managed to get a right hand in on Seth, too.
  • Priest waves on Dominik Mysterio and Rhea Ripley to come down, too. Balor grabs the briefcase and says not to do anything because that isn’t Plan A. In the distraction, Rollins gets back on top, hits a stomp and gets a two-count.
  • Finn gets a Coup de Grace and….Rollins kicks out.
  • With a distracted referee, Rollins stomps Balor’s head into the Money in the Bank briefcase and gets the pin to retain.
  • I just don’t think that running this back for that to be the ultimate outcome, which isnt’ all that different from what we saw at the last pay-per-view, was worth it. We didn’t need 2 of this. It should’ve just been this at SummerSlam and something else prior, or something else different here.

Time for another commercial with The Miz and Alpha Academy arguing over Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

WWE Women’s Championship Triple Threat Match: Asuka (c) vs. Bianca Belair vs. Charlotte Flair

  • I think there’s a very good chance we get an Iyo Sky cash-in here.
  • Interesting the entrance order went Flair, Asuka, Belair. I would have thought Asuka would come out last since she’s the champion.
  • The crowd doesn’t seem incredibly into this. Am I hearing that correctly?
  • Definitely 3 of the best women in WWE history in this match. However, there are certainly some moments going on here that aren’t living up to their skill levels.
  • Flair whiffed the moonsault. Belair’s selling it anyway. Then, Flair whiffed taking a DDT from Asuka. C’mon Charlotte. What’s going on here?
  • Belair’s been selling her knee. Now that she fell on the steel steps to the outside and yelled “Ow! Fuck!” She’s getting checked on by some trainers and referees. Legit injury, or good sell job? That remains to be seen. Probably a work.
  • Belair is being helped to the back.
  • Asuka kicks out of Flair’s spear.
  • Belair comes back to the ring and does a 450 splash onto Flair (who had Asuka in a Figure 8 at the time). Two-count.
  • Flair’s all over the place botching here. Even not being able to lock in Belair’s leg for a Figure 4.
  • Asuka spits the mist in Flair’s face.
  • Belair rolls up Asuka and wins the title while being locked in a Figure 4. Not the finish I was expecting.
  • And here comes Iyo Sky with Bayley! She cashes in, hits her moonsault and we have a new champion again! There’s one of your few SummerSlam moments of the night.
  • Dakota Kai is also out here to celebrate with the rest of Damage CTRL.

Tribal Combat for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jey Uso

  • I’ll see you in 25 minutes when the entrances are over.
  • No set design or anything to make this feel special. The only thing they have going on is that they’re both wearing their leis.
  • Roman says if Jey wins, he himself will put the red lei on him.
  • My suspicion for this match is that Jimmy Uso will cost Jey the match, either inadvertently or on purpose. As far as my hopes go, though, I hope Roman wins outright with ZERO interference. He needs to assert his dominance and not have another one of those lame duck “only retained by getting help from Solo Sikoa” type victories.
  • This is off to such a sloooooooow start. And it isn’t giving me “slow because it’s epic, so let’s build to it” vibes like they think they’re doing. It’s just making me wish they could get the ball rolling already.
  • Yeah. This is boring.
  • I miss when wrestlers didn’t have to pretty much use kendo sticks as the sole foreign object. It just doesn’t have the same impact and it’s progressively less and less interesting to watch people use it. So far, that’s the only thing that’s been No DQ about this match other than the lack of count-outs. Zzzzz.
  • Someone in the crowd is holding up a sign that says Tribal Queef. Highlight of this segment so far.
  • This doesn’t feel like a SummerSlam main event to me. Not only for its quality, but for the overall vibe in general. It seems more like it should be the Payback main event or something.
  • All this match is boiling down to is a few moves per minute separated by long stints of Reigns trying to get the crowd to boo him.
  • Jey’s using a strap now. Nothing really all that “wow” about it, though.
  • Now we have Solo Sikoa interfering. You knew this was going to happen. And that, as I’ve said, rules out all legitimacy of Roman just proving himself to be the definitive top dog. I don’t know why WWE is so invested in having him be the record-breaking guy, but they refuse to let him win anything on his own just because he’s a heel.
  • Reigns inadvertently spears Solo when Jey moves out of the way. Jey hits a spear of his own for a two-count.
  • Jey splashes Solo through the commentary table. We’re getting toward the end of the match, but nobody’s gone through the table in the corner, so that’s probably the end of it once that comes into play.
  • Jey goes to the top rope. Splash. Two-count because Jey gets pulled off Roman by Jimmy. Called that one from a mile away. Why? Because even though it’s illogical, it’s for damn sure the thing WWE thinks will be the most interesting to get people talking, and they’ll milk it for the next couple weeks with segments of Jimmy “explaining his actions”.
  • “Fuck you Jimmy” chant.
  • Roman spears Jey through the table. Pinfall. Done.
  • Thumbs down, and not because Jey lost, but because this was a boring segment that did nothing to help Roman’s credibility and the big twist was easy to see coming AND makes no sense. Lame way to end this show that started off with 3 better matches than this.
